Captain's Log — 2020

December 2020

An intruder alert sounded as a transporter breached Skadthi's shields. Medical isolation fields activated immediately. Lieutenant Javra Kel put on an EVA suit, armed herself and moved through the ship towards the Sullen. Kenar Douglass did the same and cleared the engineering spaces. They converged on Sick Bay where it had trapped Doctor Otxoa and the EMH. Javra fired her phaser which reacted with the isolation field the Sullen had been pressing against. The blast knocked both to the decking. In reaction, the Sullen emitted a thin vapour of toxic and noxious compounds that began to break down the organic polymers of the ship. Captain Tekenat disagreed with the alternatives and ordered that plasma be routed into the compartment to molecularize all organic matter.

Lieutenant Kijr identified the method by which the Sullen were able to transport one of their kind aboard Skadthi. The engineer increased the shield density to close the loophole. Sandar provided the solution to the Klingon ship still two hours away. Tekenat tried again, unsuccessfully, to open a dialogue with the Sullen and give them an opportunity to surrender their command staff for a Federation trial. The response was an attempt to transport another Sullen aboard. After that failed, the Sullen transported their larvae off the freighter and cloaked.

The Tellarite freighter appeared abandoned although there was still a dampening field in it's cargo hold.

Lewis squirmed when face-to-face with Captain Bresa. He wasn't  a hero who had rescued the Hasad family. Yeefa offered a thousand blessings in thanks. The Hasad's journey to a garden among the stars was not unlike the long journey of the Gatrubbian people. After their next delivery, the Hasad could be dropped off at a port to continue their search.

Samuel Winters did not waste time in asking to see the captain. He had reviewed the ship's logs.enroute. Xin was happy to see a new body aboard. Lewis interrupted.

Bresa was resigned to being alone, again, for Scribe Grimana Day. Malot tried her best to follow tradition. The whole crew was invited to the common area. Station's ancillary also attended. Samuel came aboard in time to celebrate with the crew. To Quidano, it was like seeing a ghost or an apparition created by Spirit Winter. Scribe Grimana Day was when one reflects on the past to enlighten the direction of the next chapter of life.

Sandar was glad to earn some credits and disembark at Outpost 20. The ship was hastily repaired and held together with prayers. The outpost was protected by a pair of Starfleet ships being so close to the Neutral Zone. The old J-Type Freighter was swept with a tachyons and cleared to dock. The captain suggested he could find other freighter work at the Spooks and Daggers.

Ambassador Magar finalized food preparations with Ana. Some Cardassians would debase themselves by eating in front of their lessers if the food was free. Ana offered a basket of lemon croissants for the ambassador to take back to the embassy. The holosuite had been designed in a traditional Mongolian style for the White Moon Festival. Outside the yurt was a simulated landscape including humans and animals appropriate to the height of the Mongol Empire. Magar and Station discussed all of the smells in the program: wet yak, wet felt, people, horse dung, etc. and decided to slightly reduce the realism and add roasting meat smells. Damon was mesmerized by the tower of cookies. Varen was glad for a break from the routine of duty. Radak waited only long enough for an adult to give her permission to run to the cookie table. Magar kept a watchful eye on Damon's beast.

Quotes of the Month

Varen agreed. "I certainly don't want to put people at risk, but the freighter crew went to considerable effort to hide whatever they're hauling. I doubt they would have done so if they were only transporting self-sealing stem bolts or quadrotriticale."

—Michael, as engineer Varen Kijr, with a couple of great Trek references.

"Doctor, do you have a phaser?" Eskarne asked. She fought down the panick which was welling deep inside of her. Despite the calm intonation of her voice, she felt more fearful than she ever had.

"I do not. It would be against my programming to cause harm. Also, I have no instinct for self-preservation which would entice me to arm myself against a perceived threat." responded the EMH.

“Doctor well you are the most useless computer on this ship, important yes, but bloody useless!”

"We can revisit this moral debate when you are under less stress." replied the EMH.

—The moral dilemma of the Sullen intruder allowed us to share our enjoyment of "The Good Place" (available on Netflix) and it's hilarious presentation of the trolley car problem.

Ambassador Magar spoke with Ana Ferguson about supplying a mountain of cookies for the White Moon Festival. There were a lot of human festivals at the same time of year. Station explained that this particular festival was to unburden oneself from debts and disagreements and begin the year anew. It also involved cookies. Nor sent invitations to the residents of Sentinel Station.

Eiwan called home to her old friend dewu:wa to make amends. Toms Chefel apologized to Ana Ferguson about the crate of Johvan rhubarb. He wanted to make reparations ahead of the White Moon Festival. The chef accepted a crate of Earth apples instead.

Sandar visited Tekenat and Giron aboard a Federation medical ship. Everyone was on the mend. There was a growing public demand to retaliate against Zeon.

Rebar coaxed Yeefa and her broodlings out of hiding. His plan of approaching the captain fell apart immediately. Bresa calmly asked where Yeefa wanted to go. She knew their destination as the Blessed Garden as described in the Silent Tome. Axel was still under contract with the Setlin Mining Guild. Bresa offered to drop them off somewhere they could continue their search. In the meantime, Rebar could show their passengers to quarters aboard the Beta. Michael Lewis earned his nickname, 'Rebar', while serving on the short-range freighter Parsifal. He had an inner strength that let him last three years on a ship where most couldn't last one.

Ashon-Milyo was surprised to hear that the Kharians were actively negotiating with the Delta Freedom Alliance. Clan Turg'ak had secured nothing as a counter to the Rex Gret'ak. Clan Kel'ak secured a communications facility with which to contact the galaxy beyond the Sphere.

Samuel thought back to his time aboard Columbus Trading Post when the Nal'Gaharay swept through. The terrorist group had a simple anti-Alpha philosophy. After hours of bombardment, several Nal'Gaharay foot soldiers boarded for hand-to-hand combat against unarmed civilians. One alien stood still, unwilling to kill. Samuel recognized that alien face in a job ad aboard the cargo ship Axel. He was hired as the new security officer. Toraith had been recruited into the Black Guard and was spending more time off-ship. Quidano was concerned that Axel was taking on more dangerous missions.

The EMH identified Doctor Otxoa's attacker as a Sullen. Captain Tekenat and Ensign Hondrick filled in the rest of the crew on Sullen tactics: Sullen birth their young in living creatures to be externally digested and consumed. Ensign Kel's report aligned with what was known of the Sullen. So did a Klingon report of a Vulcan freighter. Ensign Serota was adamant that the young aboard the Tellarite ship were innocent. The captain ordered the freighter be disabled and towed to the nearest Starfleet facility. A Sullen ship decloaked immediately and boarded Skadthi. Isolation fields were raised through USS Skadthi's interior to limit it's movement. Ensign Kijr analysed the sensor readings but could not figure out the method by which the Sullen transported through their shields. Lieutenant Kel donned an environmental suit and phaser rifle to clear the ship.

October 2020

Yeefa Nefin returned from an exhausting shift in the deepest reserves of Mine Seven. Her husband Ifen was being sent into the Borehole again. She awoke to ground quakes and sirens, rushing to protect her broodlings. Yeefa briskly approached Michael Lewis and Tirza Webb. In broken syntax, she offered a trade for deliverance off Setlin. Tirza deferred to the captain but Lewis knew they were desperate and they had to decide before their Ferpan babysitter returned. Lewis and Webb lifted off the planet with a hold full of unprocessed dilitium; and the Nefin family. He was on edge, worried about the authorities on-planet and how the Axel crew would react. Tirza was willing to keep Lewis' secret.

Quidano and Bresa met over breakfast: lichen and broth; and, coffee. Toraith had gotten into trouble too many times and it was endangering the ship. Fortuitously, Enlas Vaj had a business opportunity tailored to Toraith's talents (after dismissing the ship's Klingon and former Nal'G foot soldier as unfit for his needs). In exchange he would keep Axel from being grounded by a police investigation. It felt like they traded one bad situation for another. Toraith was given his first assignment by the Black Guard: capture or kill the Caitian pirate Pruul.

Quidano guided the linking of Axel and Beta. Bresa hoped their cargo run would be finished before Scribe Grimana Day.

Commander Selan lead the group to a hiding spot across the street from the medical facility. She and Ensign Tekenat would scout the facility. The Vulcan tactical officer put his trust in the Ekosian squad commander.

The away team beamed aboard the Tellarite vessel and were immediately overcome by the smell of putrefaction. Their tricorders were not functioning properly and relied on a visual inspection. The bridge crew were dead at their stations which chirping sounds coming from the bodies. Lieutenant Kijr and Ensign Serota were tasked with analysing the Tellarite freighter. There were no signs of a fight; there was no damage and the weapons had not been fired. A derelict Vulcan ship had been found nearby by the KDF Vorn. The boarding party reported the crew were all dead and the ship overrun with creatures. The away team was beamed directly to medical isolation. Doctor Otxoa was the more greviously affected with necrotic soft tissues. Lieutenants Douglass and Kel whom had minimal contact with the life forms aboard the freighter, were released to self-quarantine.

Ashon-Milyo began the second day of negotiations with an apology for his behaviour the day before. He began by offering educational materials. Talk quickly turned to ships and weapons. Ashon-Milyo and Hunter suspected that their embedded intelligence officer of unsanctioned, after-hours negotiations. Starfleet was holding the Kharians under the heel of their boot while the Federation offered handouts of food and medicine. The Kharians demanded freedom to go to the stars.

Cadet-Ensign Hazel May was declaring missing after not reporting in and seven days overdue. It was found abandoned with signs of Borg activity. Hazel had asked Ana Ferguson to look after Damon. She wanted someone not in Starfleet who cared about him. Damon awoke from his regeneration cycle sensing something wrong. Damon snuck out of Ana's quarters. Radak applied logic to reassure Damon that Hazel was not in pain. They were each others' first best friend. Radak suggested meditation to help Damon gain control over his feelings. The search for Hazel was called off. She was presumed assimilated. Ana gave Damon an isolinear chip she had hoped never to have to give. It was Hazel's goodbye message to Damon. She appreciated their time together learning to be human again. She wished him to live every day joyfully.

Tabitha wrote Hazel out of our story with the news she had been re-assimilated. She has been awarded a Purple Heart. Hazel chose her family when she came aboard a year ago: Damon, Ana, Radak. The loss of this character has a ripple effect across other characters' stories. Re-assimilation is it's own mourning process. As Hazel was a Cadet-Ensign, she would be awarded a posthumous commission to Ensign.

Lieutenant, Junior Grade, t'Ishal of the Delta Freedom Alliance informed the Gorn Hegemony and Captain Voci of the kidnapping of Toraith during the Religion and Culture Conference and Survival Training on Chetzia. Dundee Gojari confirmed that Toraith was aboard the Viatorem. Captain Mason would be paid after destroying the Axel and delivering Toraith alive. Captain Mason of the Viatorem dropped out of warp to have his revenge on the Axel while it's crew was divided. He had Toraith in chains after capturing him from the conference. Bresa tried to barter their cargo to get Toraith back. Targa climbed into the gunnery room to offer his ship a fighting chance.

Ensign Tekenat was the only non-Ekosian at the bar. He was assigned as a peacekeeper between Ekos and Zeon. He was being watched by nearly everyone, including (then, Flight Lieutenant) Sandar. Sandar approached the Vulcan and suggested he go for a walk so they could talk privately.

Captain Mirel called Warrant Officer Polikov to her office to learn more about Operation Boxfront. His name appeared in a decrypted communique. Station was locked out of audio and video within the captain's office. Polikov admitted to the existence of the operation and it's importance to Federation security. Starfleet was supplying arms in a proxy war as cover for larger operations in the sector. Mirel demanded that her station be kept out of harms way.

Scion, a ship of the Gatrubbian Trade Authority, suffered a catastophic failure and all souls were lost. It's cargo decelerated from warp and was adrift.

Teller Lakim Saras send a copy GAEICO's offer to Bresa. The Gatrubbian Merchant Fleet were using a new design: there would be no spare parts of the configuration Axel had flight-tested. And the previous contract would be cancelled with Bresa given the flight-tested prototype as compensation.

Nahri did not trust anyone. She activated the sensor dampening device to have complete privacy within her hotel suite. She exited her room as the mousy, plodding Susan Day. Station recommended the Second Chances Cafe. Roberta and Eiwan were enjoying a break in the cafe. Nahri cringed at the introduction to station security. She changed back into the persona of Amanda Barrington after returning to her hotel suite. Ensign Hunter assured Susan Day that the station was safe. She and Chief Petty Officer Eiwan made their way to the top level of the Promenade where several sensors had been vandalized. Hunter was bothered by the petty vandalism but moreso by business owners purposely damaging and dampening the security sensors. Station felt that the vandalism compromised the security of her residents. The station had not fully recovered from the Kharian raids three years earlier. They encountered someone who, on seeing security, ran for it. He was stunned while fleeing Hunter.

Radak invited Damon to join her hive--as a Honeybee. He was welcomed by all the children at the next gathering. Rex was given a kerchief as an honourary member. He was quickly befriended by Lextra. The Hive was given a task to earn a Community Badge by doing something to make the community happier. Station disuaded Radak's offer to help Chief Eiwan repair broken sensors. Instead, it was recommended they be rewarded for their hard work. Radak and Damon asked Ana to help them earn a badge as members of the Honeybees. Buzz Buzz.

Arev, Sandar and Seket followed the leftward path leading to a staircase. An insectoid exoskeleton and a rusted weapon were in a side room; then more exoskeletons. Seket felt as if they were being watched. Ariana, Emily and Outanyocon followed the rightward path. There were heavily eroded carvings on the walls. The tunnel ended in a pile of rubble with an open chamber beyond. The three theorized about the purpose of a deep tunnel. Emily squeezed through an opening to find a chamber miles across filled with bioluminescent plants. Ariana believed they reached the chamber through a microwormhole known to be used in the Sphere's construction.

Quidano suspected that the raiders had gotten only partway through the cargo hold of the Charbon before getting sloppy and giving up. Kivul knew the valuable cargo would be buried deep in the cargo hold and labeled innocuously. Targa decided to go back to Axel and leave Quidano and Kivul to explore the derelict ship. He began to transport food and medical supplies aboard as Tirza marked it with pattern enhancers. Kivul revealed that the special cargo they were searching for was a dismembered Borg drone. Despite the risk, it was immeasurably valuable. Targa agreed with Kivul and offered to take their opinion to the captain. Bresa was amenable to packing Axel's cargo holds full and leaving nothing valuable behind.

The 2020 Religion and Culture Conference and Survival Training concluded. It was an incredible success. Tabitha worked very, very hard for weeks before and during the conference. The monthly report is posted on the Star Trek: Borderlands blog.

Sam was forced into isolation by a hospital lockdown over a presumptive (and, thankfully, negative) case of COVID-19. Ten days of sleeping on a chair. Otherwise he is well and back writing on OH1.

Karen has introduced a career criminal, Nahri, who never goes out in public without a disguise. She has also opened a storyline involving children and young adults. Both storylines invite players to come together. The effort and planning coming up with a framework for characters to work together is much appreciated.

Honourable mention to Tabitha. Her introduction of the Honeybee Hive is a tongue-in-cheek combination of feel-good 80s sitcom and expression of her appreciation for the Borg.

Both Karen and Tabitha are finding stories of community.

February 2020

Six of Twelve contacted Lieutenant Outanyocon promptly at their pre-arranged communication time. The drone invited the sociologist to attend a presentation at the 2420 Religion and Culture Conference, and, survival training where it would be presenting about Borg perfection. Outanyocon clarified the protocols and procedures of the social event. Six requested an explanation by Hazel and Damon had not been returned to the Collective. After direct contact with Species 8472, they were disconnected from the Collective, could not rejoin the Collective, did not self-destruct as required and instead became individuals. The two agreed to discuss it further at the conference.

Targa had thoroughly examined the ship after removing the mass of foliage left behind by Spirit Winter. He also received word that Gatrubbian Cargo Service had purchased three Cestus-class ships just like Axel.

Captian Mirel agreed to provide Agent Parker with official logs and reports. She declined to volunteer personal logs and official logs would be redacted of sensitive information.

Ensign Thirteen of Starbase Horizon requested information on the severed drones aboard Sentinel Station. Horizon had acquired a severed drone after a confrontation with the Borg. The request was forwarded to Doctors Saghder and CAX.

Station and Malot enjoyed shared a holographic tea. Malot wondered if she would ever encounter Spirit Winter again. Neither had the statistical lifespan of organic entities. Both used mobile forms as an extension of themselves.

Nahri traveled the Sentinel Station under the pseudonym of Amanda Barrington. She was directed to the Silver Forest Hotel, the station's most opulent accommodation. She established a dampening field so that she could shed her disguise. She left her suite as Susan Day, Ms. Barrington's assistant. Station offered a tour of the Promenade starting with Second Changes Cafe.

Chief Eiwan and Ensign Hunter adjusted the security sensors on the Promenade. Eiwan added a dead-man trigger to augment the active sensors and allay privacy concerns. Hunter increased foot patrols which reassured residents. She commented on purposeful vandalism of sensors in some Promenade businesses.

Captain Bresa had requested exclusive use of a Provider module and Teller Lakim Saras at GAEICO had good news for him. She had travelled inside the Provider module on it's test flight. In exchange for the module at no cost, Axel waived any extra consideration for cargo transport in the future.

Kivul came to Axel with a salvage operation in-hand. The Lugash was eleven hours away if they pushed Axel's engines. Axel dropped out of warp some distance from the large freighter. It was scorched and cut open along it's flank. Axel approached slowly through a field of debris with more mass than Axel could even carry. Quidano looked over his EV suit and tools in preparation for boarding the Clarbon. He, Kivul and Tirza were set to board the ship. Targa was right to be suspicious of the Romulan's motive. She was looking for an item that had been aboard the ship and likely why it had been raided in the first place.

Seket identified a road surface leading into the canyon. Sandar and Ariana volunteered to climb over the collapsed rock face and set up a transporter point for the rest of the expedition. Sandar had to jump from one handhold to another to complete the climb. On the other side was a structure carved into the cliff. In a recess was a carved insectoid being that sparked much speculation. The excavation team decided to split in two to explore deeper into the structure: Ariana, Emily and Outanyocon to the right; Arev, Sandar and Seket to the left.

The Drint and Damon storyline has been turned into OH1's newest short novel. This is our sixth short novel and accessible on our short fiction page.

The conference continues on Chetzia. Many of our players (a total of 23 players from across Star Trek: Borderlands) are writing for the conference and that has made OH1 a quiet place.

Lieutenant Arev dismissed the resale value of Drint's canister of nanoprobes. They were examined by Station and Lieutenant Outanyoon as forgeries utilizing a combination of tritanium compounds, electromagnetic signatures and Hazel's DNA. As Drint posed no real danger, he was released and advised to leave the station.

Lady Margot Daraine Eloize came aboard the station and was prompty and thoroughly disappointed by Station's lack of service. She was looking for the Nanite Spa and criticized everyone who told her it did not exist. She disappointedly mistook a Bajoran with an ocular implant for a Borg. Lady Margot asked the station's governor to delete Station as it was entirely unhelpful. She had been undergoing nanite treatments from a man named Drint and wanted nanites from the source: Hazel and Damon. In anger, Lady Margot down-rated the station and everything and everyone in it to ruin their reputation. She then left without another word.

Doctor Saghder shared the Federation database on liberated Borg drones with Ensign CAX, the new station pediatrician. Damon asked about the lifecycle of Circaloids. CAX was middle-aged and babies were born through a spore-like process. The nanny felt "weird" to Damon.

Damon and CAX took Rex for a walk on the Promenade and stopped for lunch at Second Chances Cafe. CAX was surprised by Station's exploration of food.

CAX decided to decorate his quarters with Station's help. The plan was for lots and lots of plants.

Radak showed up to Damon's for a sleepover with her sleeping bag and Rufus. They showed each other their Christmas gifts. Damon and Radak replicated sandwiches and lemonade so CAX could take the two to a holographic beach where they played in the surf and built sand castles.

Jacques, the nefarious antiques dealer and arms smuggler, decided to set his sights on the space around Sentinel Station. He even prepared his communiques on an ancient Mac computer.

CIA agent Lezlie Parker was dispatched to Sentinal Station. Captain Mirel was not enthusiastic about the arrival of the Compliance Investigation Agency.

Ensign Hunter monitored the Promenade with the new optical sensor network. Magar purchased a bottle of yarmok sauce as a pretense to visit Seket and trade insults. She mentioned the new security system in passing and waved directly at the camera as she left Namche Bazaar. Hunter wondered if she had been tipped off about the new security measures and watched the ambassador disappear. Station speculated that, as one who values her privacy, the ambassador carried a sensor dampener.

Magar materialized on the Kriyat to meet with her Obsidian Order colleague and receive instructions.

Ensign Hunter decided to speak with Ambassador Magar about the station's new security measures and vehemently reassured her that the measures did not extend to the embassy itself. The ambassador asked about imminent threats which the security officer also downplayed.

Malot correlated gift-giving with the ancient human myth of Santa Claus. Kemak carefully unwrapped the gift she received. It was an old-style data rod containing a copy of 'The Never-Ending Sacrifice'. Toraith questioned how Santa Claus would know the toys he played with as a hatchling. Malot's matrix changed again and she identified herself as Spirit Winter: "She seeks high and low, so that beauty she may show. The search for mysteries and marvels is the goal of her travels." Tirza Webb was instantly transported from Sentinel Station to SS Axel. She had been reminiscing about her time on the ship and it seemed Spirit Winter had granted her wish. She didn't recognize half of the crew. Targa expressed concern about the foliage growing into key ship systems. Through Malot it could access nearly every system. Bresa offered to reason with the being. It didn't seem malicious. Every member of the crew had received their gift. Malot stated that Spirit Winter had vacated it's programming. Targa was skeptical and suggested a complete diagnostic. He could not take Malot's word for it.

Malot, free of Spirit Winter, wanted to share his experience with Station over subspace link. Spirit Winter wanted to spread joy and used the childhood memories of each member of Axel's crew to do that.

Outanyocon and Sandar accepted Jentrisek's deal. Latinum and sensor telemetry for the original location of a Johvan coin. Members of the archaeological expedition gathered aboard the shuttle Elbe. Outanyocon and Sandar were joined by security officer Arev, geologist Ariana, fellow amateur archaeologist Emily and, surpisingly, Seket. Everyone was excited. Ariana hoped the outcome was better than the last trip into the Sphere. Everyone was a little worried when they recognized a Kharian monument in the distance. Outanyocon shared what he knew. Their lead was a Johvan coin which was an usual artifact. Ariana had first-hand experience with all three Sphere cultures. While passing over the area they noticed a carved cliff face within a canyon. Sensors detected only small animals in the vicinity. There were no fortifications at the mouth of the canyon.

Lady Margot didn't trust this computer to take her luggage. Who knows where it would put them. No. She would have to handle /that/ herself as well. She looked through the crowd. She saw plenty of Starfleet uniforms. But no uniforms for the station personnel. No one was wearing an embroidered vest with the station logo. No one was making intentional eye contact to acknowledge her. It really was just a computer interface. No wonder she'd never read about this place in a travel magazine. It didn't even rate one star. Still. This is where the Borgs were and she was clearly an early adopter of nanoprobe treatments. They didn't even have a spa up and running yet. She would beat the rush and have the highly coveted title of 'first customer'. She could leverage that for priority service, be mentioned by name in their advertising. Gag.
